A highlight of Broome has been the Staircase to the Moon!

Hi everyone,

We have now been in Broome for six nights & the weather has been great.Broome is a thriving town in the Kimberley region of Western Australia with a population of 15,500 residents. It is a prime tourist destination. The establishment of pearling in the area in the 1860s brought Chinese, Europeans, Malays, Japanese & Filipinos to the area so there is a very cosmopolitan population in the district. In addition to sampling the local cuisine at Divers Tavern on multiple occasions & local cafes we enjoyed a barbecue with our Tasmanian friends Gary, Margaret, Mike & Shirley. We met Mike & Shirley at Eighty Mile Beach Caravan Park & I have known Margaret & Gary for probably 15-19 years.

We timed our stay in Broome to coincide with a special event “the Staircase to the Moon” which only occurs a few months a year when the full moon rises & the low tide cooperates so that the mudflats are exposed. The reflections on the mudflats as the moon begins to rise from the horizon are like a staircase.

We have had a car service done whilst in Broome & so far, we have done 17,000 kilometres since leaving Hobart (excluding sea miles).Today we headed north west out of Broome on the Cape Leveque road (if you can call it that) & visited some lovely coastal spots with great ocean views. We also visited the Willie Creek Pearl Farm where we took a very interesting tour & boat cruise.  They also have a showroom (surprise, surprise!) & Cheryl now has a bracelet & I am a little poorer!

It was 35 Degrees so we had to find some shade for lunch.
