We are now headed to Cape York!

Hello & welcome to our blog of our 2023 Australian mainland holiday.

We have a few overseas followers who follow our adventures, so we are including details of roads & locations as we know they follow us on Google Earth.

After a great weekend in Boulia we retraced our steps to Winton and headed north to the town of Hughenden. Hughenden is an outback artist haven, with a trail of sculptures installed around the town wearing its history and heart on its sleeve. Made from scrap metal by local artists, installations such as Darby the Dinosaur, Leanneosaur and the Pterosaurs, and fish sculptures adorn the streets and local businesses. Hughenden is a major sheep and cattle growing region.

Leaving Hughenden we headed east along the Flinders Highway to Charters Towers, then Townsville and to Cairns. At Cairns we have had the car and caravan serviced and caught  up with friends, Damien and Susan a couple of times. I was also able to catch up with an old Papua New Guinea mate, Bob Foote.

Cairns is the launch place for our next big part of this trip. We are travelling to the northernmost tip of Australia i.e. Cape York – it is a bucket list item!

We are going remote and consequently have stocked up bigtime. All wine and whisky supplies are loaded but we do not have much room for food ha ha!

Day 1 saw us travel from Cairns to Mareeba to Laura. Day 2 saw us travel from Laura to Musgrave River Roadhouse. On Day 3 we travelled to Archer River Roadhouse. Today we travelled to Weipa. Weipa is a remote mining town situated on the western side of Cape York. It is a bauxite mine. We are here for 5 nights.
