Oh Dear – it happened again!!!!!!!!!

As you would have read in our last report we enjoyed ourselves in Darwin but left after nine nights. We made our way south down the highway to the historic town of Pine Creek. Pine Creek is essentially a gold mining town which stumbled into existence when the teams building the Overland Telegraph Line in […]

Hooray we have our car back!!!!!

Last time we blogged our car had been towed on the back of a tilt tray into Darwin Mitsubishi. We had some major internal engine damage but it is all fixed now. It was horrifically expensive to repair but we are glad. We did a harbour cruise which specialised in World War 2 sites and […]

Leaving Katherine we travelled up the Stuart Highway and turned off before Adelaide River and travelled on a very ordinary shortcut to Daly River.Daly River is considered a remote community. It has an airstrip for medical emergencies, a pub and some caravan parks. The major attraction of the area is its fishing. The river is a prolific barramundi fishery particularly following “the wet runoff”. Unfortunately, we are not here at the “run off” time. We had a fish for an hour but caught zilch. Cheryl, I think we should come back with our cartopper boat next year!

After a relaxing 3 days at Daly River we again travelled on a fairly ordinary road to Adelaide River and through Batchelor to a bush camp near Litchfield National Park.Litchfield National Park is an ancient landscape shaped by water. It features numerous stunning waterfalls which cascade from the sandstone plateau of the Tabletop Range. The Park […]

After leaving the “Alice” we travelled up the Stuart Highway stopping at roadhouses to refuel as well as going through Tenant Creek which was the scene of Australia’s last gold rush.

We visited The Devils Marbles. The marbles balance precariously atop each other in mind bending formations. The granite boulders glow a stunning red in the early morning and as the sun sets each day. Scientists believe that the boulders were part of a large formation that cracked, and that natural erosion over thousands of years rounded […]

Change of Plan!

We have had to make some changes to our planned travel. Upon leaving Coober Pedy we had planned to travel up the Stuart Highway to Erldunda Roadhouse then turn onto the Lasseter Highway and visit Yulara and Kings Canyon.  Unfortunately, the regions accommodation is all booked out through to August. These popular destinations have not been able […]

Opal Country!

After our night at Pimba, mid-morning found us back on the Stuart Highway and heading north.  We found the countryside interesting and enjoyed magnificent views over the salt lakes of Island Lagoon and Lake Hart.    We found a great free camp just outside Coober Pedy. I went for a good walk and discovered 5 abandoned diggings with 4 of the 5 shafts […]

Back to the “Outback” Yea!!!!!

After Port Augusta our next destination was Pimba on the Stuart Highway. We stopped to look at geographical points of interest along the way and a spot of lunch before arriving at Spuds Roadhouse at Pimba. This free camp ($5.00 donation) has toilets and showers and proved extremely popular. There were about 25 caravanners, mobile homes, camper trailers etc.  The next […]

The Mallee, the Riverland and now the gateway to the outback!

We left Waikerie mid-morning and travelled to the historic town of Morgan on the Murray River. It was once the busiest inland port on the river handling 80 boats a week and an extensive railway presence with 8 trains. The past is evident in the township with many historical buildings that are still utilized today.   After crossing on the ferry, we visited the local Tourist Information Centre, craft […]

Great Silo Art, Scenery and free camping locations!!!

Our overnight camp at Underbool was brilliant. Facilities were first class and well maintained.  Underbool is the gateway to the Pink Lakes and Murray – Sunset National Park. The Pink Lakes appear pink under certain conditions and are best in winter and in spring. The wildlife and birdlife are abundant around the lakes, but we saw only kangaroos. We were mightily impressed with the […]
