We have crossed the Nullarbor!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Folks,

Another update

We are sorry we cannot post many photos. We are remote & there is no National Broadband Network so it is very ordinary upload speed and very time consuming. We have had a fantastic few days and ticked off an Aussie icon bucket list fixture…we have crossed the Nullarbor Plain.

It was sad to leave Streaky Bay as the weather had been great & it is such a lovely place not to mention our brilliant caravan park which had only been open since February. We made our way past Haslam & Smoky Bay to Ceduna. Ceduna is the largest town before commencing the Nullarbor Plain so we stocked up on food & fuel as well as visited the Visitor Information Centre. The Visitor Information Centre has a Nullarbor Map which proved invaluable & it was free! Ceduna has a lovely coastal outlook. Our first stop down the road was Penong for lunch. Penong is an Aboriginal word for waterhole & is known as the “Town of a Hundred Windmills”. It has a roadhouse and the last general store for a thousand kilometres.

We then travelled to Nundroo Roadhouse where we refuelled and learnt that Nullarbor Roadhouse would not have fuel for three days. Luckily, I have a long-range fuel tank & carry an extra 20 Litres of diesel. We found a great free camp beyond Yalata. We had to interrupt our journey to get a photo of one of the iconic Nullarbor road signs.

Watch out for……………………?

The next day we visited the Great Australian Bight. There is a cliff top boardwalk with viewing platforms & the Bunda Cliffs are amazing. These cliffs stretch over 200 kilometres & there are several coastal lookouts along the highway. It was very windy!!!!!!!

We had now reached the treeless plain or “nullus arbor”.

The treeless Nullarbor Plain

We travelled past Nullarbor where there were quite a few vehicles parked by the roadhouse awaiting fuel & onto Border Village. We took the obligatory photo of Rooey 11 & the international signpost before entering Quarantine at the SA/WA Border.

A long way from anywhere?

About 10 minutes past Border Village is Eucla. We refuelled ($1.61 a litre) and visited the museum. Eucla was a telegraph station linking WA with the rest of the world and commenced operation in 1877. The sand dunes are now taking over the original building. There is also a memorial to Edward Eyre whom was the first white man to travel from Ceduna to Perth.

Eucla Telegraph Station is being consumed by the dunes.

After leaving Eucla we travelled through Mundrabilla & onto Madura Pass before free camping about 40 kilometres from Cocklebiddy. The next day we went through Cocklebiddy & onto Caiguna before stopping & photographing the road sign that promotes Australia’s longest stretch of straight road. Both Cheryl & I drove part of the 90 miles straight!

We lunched near the Balladonia Roadhouse & visited the cultural heritage museum. We then travelled through the Fraser Range which has granite hills and the largest native Eucalyptus hardwood forest in the world. We overnighted at a great free camp in Norseman before heading to Kalgoorlie where we shall be for a few days.
