Hi to all our followers from sunny Kalbarri,
This morning we left Geraldton and made the 160 kilometres’ journey to Kalbarri on the coast. From what we have seen so far, we are glad to be here for 4 nights. After leaving Geraldton we headed to Northampton before travelling to Port Gregory where we checked out a couple of tourist spots. The first stop was at the Port Gregory Convict Hiring Station. The convict ruins were located on Lynton Station.

Our next stop was at Port Gregory which is a small seaside town. The picturesque town is encircled by 5 kilometres of exposed reef and was originally established to serve a mining venture and whalers. however, it soon proved unsuitable for large vessels. We were fortunately in the right place at the right time when a lobster boat negotiated the massive reef and breaking waves and came to the small-town jetty where a refrigerated truck was waiting to take off their lobster catch.

We then stopped at another interesting spot…. the Pink Lake. The lagoon was given its colourful name by an explorer, George Grey, who camped on its edge in 1839. The pink hue is due to the presence of an algae. The algae are a source of beta-carotene, a food-colouring agent and source of vitamin A. The lagoon contains the world’s largest microalgae production plant which provides specialty feed for prawn and fish farmers as well as the aquarium trade.

We travelled onto Kalbarri. Kalbarri is a seaside town located 590 kilometres north of Perth and around halfway along Western Australia’s Coral Coast. Kalbarri sits are the mouth of the Murchison River and is surrounded by national park. It has magnificent coastal scenery and inland gorges and is also a prime spot for whale watching during the migratory season. Today we concentrated on the amazing coastal scenery in the area which is sometimes quite precarious and difficult to access but at other times accessibility is not a problem. We also photographed a brilliant sunset before enjoying a great meal at the local tavern with Cheryl going for pork belly and yours truly going with red snapper.
