Wonderful Karigini

Hi to all,
Today, we left Karratha & travelled 200 km north almost to Port Hedland before swinging east onto the Great Northern Highway for around another 225 km to the Auski Roadhouse to refuel then continued to Dales Gorge Camping Ground in Karijini National Park where we shall be for the next 5 days. It was a big day because we did over 500 km but it was not too bad because the roads were good & there were not too many road trains. Karijini is Western Australia’s second biggest national park & one of the most spectacular sights in the Pilbara with its waterfalls, emerald coloured rock pools & gorges.
The park has a great system of excellent walking paths & trails. These

walks are all classified & range from easy to only for very experienced bushwalkers. The park is very popular despite its remoteness & we found people on all the trails & many swam in the pools to cool off.
We visited Hammersley, Kalamina & Dales Gorges as well as Fortescue Falls, Fern Pool & Joffre Falls. We did the Rim Walk & visited Circular Pool Lookout as well as Oxer Lookout where Hancock, Weano, Wittenoom, Red & Knox Gorges all meet.
We also travelled on some very rough gravel road (4wd only) into the mining town of Tom Price where we knew we would be able to get the internet & do our blog. Regrettably, we were unable to post so this blog in Tom Price.

After Karajini we headed down to the mining town of Newman. Newman is a BHP Billiton town with a population of 4,500 plus 2,000 fly in fly out employees. We hit the town at lunchtime & are free camped at the Newman Visitor Centre for $10 a night. We fuelled up at a $1.34 per litre for diesel which is the cheapest fuel since we left Perth. Our dearest Diesel has been at Mt. Augustus where we paid $1.75 per litre.
