Zebra Rock Mine… what a gem!

Hi everyone,

After leaving the western end of Lake Argyle & the caravan park we journeyed a short distance to quarantine at the Western Australian border before crossing into the Northern Territory.

We spent 4 months & 3 days in Western Australia & were blessed with fantastic weather. We believe we saw a fantastic cross section of this massive state. From the Goldfields to the Wheat fields to the wine growing areas to the offshore reefs to the Pilbara & Kimberley it is a spectacular country. After a short distance into the Northern Territory we turned off the highway into the Zebra Rock Mine whom operate the most beautiful laid back non-powered caravan park during the Dry season. In the Wet they operate the mine. Zebra rock is a geological enigma, oddity, rarity…..!!!!! It is neither igneous, metamorphic or sedimentary & has wonderful 3 D patterning that has been found to be mathematically perfect & parallel.

A couple of intrepid miners with their own Zebra Rock specimens for future polishing.

We enjoyed a tour of their gallery, a visit to the mine & another sunset cruise on Lake Argyle  but “Wow” was this different to the other sunset cruise we did on Lake Argyle. The top end of Lake Argyle has a lot of seasonal feeder creeks & bays which results in wonderful wetlands with much birdlife & many freshwater crocodiles. We did some fishing & Stephen caught a Silver Cobbler with his first cast.

After leaving Zebra Rock Mine we headed East to Timber Creek where we camped at Big Horse Campground overnight. The next day we drove further east for another 300 kilometres to Manbulloo Station near Katherine where we are staying 3 nights.

    1. Hi Nigel aka No. 2 you are always topical! We are having a ball but sadly not too much time left on the big island! Please keep taking care of Mum & Dad in the manner they are accustomed too since Adrian took over from me!
