After Birdsville & am on the road again!!!!!!!!

Hi everyone,

Thanks for reading our blog & your comments.

We didn’t make our fortune at the bookmakers in Birdsville, perhaps, it was our less than scientific approach to racehorse selection. My father’s name is Albert so I thought two horses with Albert in their name would be sure winners…I was wrong!

Albert the Rocket needed a rocket!

We left Birdsville on the Sunday after lunch & travelled toward Windorah. Our first stop was at Betoota where there was an abandoned hotel. We then next visited Deon’s Lookout & admired the expansive views of the plains.

After 280 kilometres of the “dreaded gravel” we hit the tar & after a short distance we found a free camp about a hundred kilometres from Windorah which we shared with five other travellers.

The next day we headed east to Windorah & then south easterly to Quilpie where we stayed for two nights in the local caravan park. Whilst in Quilpie we enjoyed some local entertainment & an Artesian Spa.

Enjoying a spa.

We then travelled south of Quilpie to Toompine – population 2!  It is a pub without a town. The pub was built in the 1890’s & is typically outback in character. Its galvanised walls must be able to tell some stories if they could talk! We had a drink – coffee! We loved the sense of humour of the publican.

We then travelled on down the road to Yowah which is an opal prospecting area & a small town. We enjoyed a dip in the local Artesian Spa and had some lunch before again travelling a few clicks down the road to a great free camp on the Paroo River just out the township of Eulo.

You have to love the signage out here!

BEFORE TODAY THE ONLY WILDLIFE WE HAD SEEN WAS MICHAEL GRANGER & ROGER WOOLLEY at Divers Tavern in Broome but today we saw oodles of emus & kangaroos.

  1. The country you have just passed thru brings back heaps of memories.. Win and I travelled it umpteen times. The publican at the Betoota pub used to go to Birdsville for annual leave.

  2. You two are having the BEST trip ! Our friends camped at Quilpie and got bogged in a flash downpour. Had to get towed to town by a farmer. Life will be pretty tame when you get back
