The Limestone Coast & the Coorong – a loooooooovely break!

Hello & thankyou again for taking the time to visit our blog.
After leaving Beachport we made our way to Robe where we stayed 3 nights. Robe is on the shores of Guichen Bay and is a charming seaside town that has a colourful & interesting history that goes back to the 1840’s. It was a great place to relax & also visit some of the local attractions.

The Lake Butler Marina is the home of the fishing fleet & recreational boats. Lake Butler is a natural lake that was once closed to the sea. Fisherman used to moor their boats out in the bay during the fishing season then drag them across the sand hills to moor in Lake Butler during the winter weather. In 1964 a deep channel was dug to allow fishing boats haven all year round.

Good catch of Gummy Shark

The Obelisk stands proudly on the point of Cape Dombey. A local builder erected the Obelisk in 1855 to act as a landmark for shipping & to contain rocket fired lifesaving equipment for stricken ships.

We departed Robe & travelled to the seaside town of Kingston SE where we stocked up before travelling on into the Coorong National Park & setting up camp for a few days at 42 Mile Crossing. It is a lovely mostly grassed campsite with a drop toilet & camp shelter. The serenity & sheer diversity make this an interesting park. The Coorong is of enormous cultural significance to Aboriginal people with much archaeological evidence of Aboriginal campsites over thousands of years. Birdwatching & moderate hiking are also popular as is fishing & 4-wheel driving. With its long & challenging beach drive, narrow crossings & secluded camping the Coorong is a favourite 4wd destination.

Nice protected camping with a few fellow campers & kangaroos

The Coorong
Very soft sand onto the beach!
The easy part of a quite high dune which was very challenging. I passed two bogged Landcruisers, a D Max & a Ford Ranger. The Toyota RAV didn’t get out of the campground. (He is fibbing again….Cheryl)

Glorious weather & magnificent beaches

Our next part of our journey took us to the Coorong township of Meningie where it was again time to replenish supplies. Meningie is on the shores of Lake Albert & not far from the mouth of the Murray River which is Australia’s longest river. Whilst at Meningie we treated ourselves to a delicious feed of Coorong Mullet at the local hotel.
