Hello everyone.
Thank you for following our blog.
I am pleased to advise that Chezza is going great & we are in real travel mode again. We had a delightful time in Lightning Ridge at the Opal Caravan Park which is one of the best we have ever seen.
Leaving the “Ridge” we travelled into Queensland via Hebel, Dirranbandi (great bakery), St George and then to Surat. It was again noticeable how the countryside got drier and we again saw more kangaroos & emus. At Surat we camped at the Surat Fishing & Restocking Club Park. It was a great free camp.

Fishing is big in Surat!

Next day saw us on the road through Roma and up to Injune where we overnighted at the Injune Rodeo Ground. It is a basic free camp which we have stayed at before. Next morning, we continued up the Carnarvon Highway through sandstone country to Rolleston and then Springsure where we free camped at Virgin Rock rest area which was quite a small free camp but packed with all sorts of RV’s.

Virgin Rock Rest Area

After our night at Virgin Rock (do not know why it is named that) we had a shirt drive into Emerald where we stayed in the Emerald RV Centre & did our washing & stocked up on food. Emerald is a major inland town in central Queensland and services huge mining & agriculture producers as well as being a major transport hub.
Leaving the Emerald, we travelled a short distance on the Gregory Highway to Capella then turned off at Capella & went through Tieri & on to German Creek near Middlemount where we free camped at Bundoora Dam for 3 nights. We spent our time at the dam with two other Tasmanian couples whom are also members of the Clarence Licenced Anglers Club. The weather was kind & the company was great. We fished with lures & baits as well as setting opera house nets for Red Claw crayfish. Red Claw is a small yabby that is vegetarian. We caught few Red Claw in the nets along with sleepy cod, eel tailed catfish, bony bream & shrimps. Numerous turtles were caught on bait as well as 2 Saratoga on the day we had left.

The dam is popular but not crowded.

Pulling the net for Red Claw.
Red Claw – but that is not going to feed us!
The turtles were a nuisance but a bit of fun.
How good are those reflections?

Our group.

We left the dam & travelled past Dysart, Moranbah through Nebo & into the Pioneer Valley where we avoided Mackay & stayed the night at Calen, a short distance north of Mackay on the Bruce Highway.

  1. Virgin Rock. Look to the mountain range at the rear of your photograph.
Part of the rock formation is supposed to look like a statue of the Virgin Mary.
I must admit I had difficulty in finding anything that looked like the real thing.

  2. Don’t hide your light under a bushel, you should be proud of beating out 23 other competitors for one of the fishing club’s more popular awards. You have every right to boast about that in your blog 🙂
