Relaxing at Cairns!

Hello everyone.
Thank you for reading our blog.
We are now in Cairns and “free camped” in Damien & Susan ‘s driveway which has been fantastic as it is so central to everything in Cairns.

It is a tight fit but it is a great free camp with wonderful hosts!

One day we visited the picturesque village of Kuranda. It is in world heritage rainforest approximately 1,000 feet above Cairns and the best way to see it is to combine the Sky rail Rainforest Cableway and the Kuranda Scenic Railway. The railway travels across 37 bridges and through 15 hand carved tunnels, reaching heights up to 328 metres above sea level as well as some waterfalls. With the Sky rail you glide just metres above the pristine rainforest canopy before descending to the forest floor. Whilst at Kuranda we had a light lunch & Cheryl checked out the market.

Whilst waiting for the train, Chezza made a new friend!

Who is that woman?

SkyRail was terrific!

Another day we visited the Cairn’s Aquarium. The Aquarium attempts to bring the reef & rain forest to you. It has many displays & rangers talks and the ability to walk, around & under the water admiring the fish etc is excellent.

The next day we jumped on a 45-minute high speed ferry for a very bumpy ride to Fitzroy Island. The island is located 29 kilometres off the coast from Cairns and was named by Captain Cook. Fitzroy Island is about beaches & rainforest. Susan accompanied us on our half day excursion to the island. The island has a resort which offers turtle tours, snorkelling, paddle boarding & other aquatic pursuits. There are also several walks to do on the island.

Upon return to Cairns we enjoyed a lovely lunch at the Hemingway Brewery. The environs and meal were excellent. The C.S.I.R.O. Research Vessel the Investigator was birthed at the wharf adjacent to the brewery so Cheryl must have felt quite at home.

Tomorrow we head south and are going in search of Cassowarys.

  1. We loved our ride on to Kuranda and we had Judy Nunn and her husband with us. Enjoyed Cairns when David did the Half iron man there.
