The Mallee, the Riverland and now the gateway to the outback!

We left Waikerie mid-morning and travelled to the historic town of Morgan on the Murray River. It was once the busiest inland port on the river handling 80 boats a week and an extensive railway presence with 8 trains. The past is evident in the township with many historical buildings that are still utilized today.

After crossing on the ferry, we visited the local Tourist Information Centre, craft shop, wharf including the restored side wheel paddle steamer PS Canally and local museum.

Great sense of humour outside the Craft Shop!

We hit the road again and just before Burra turned off the highway and headed to a free camp at Burra Gorge in the Worlds End Reserve. Cheryl reckons the Words End Reserve is appropriately named AND THAT WE WILL NOT BE GOING BACK! Stephen did a couple of walks whilst we were there.

We fueled up in the old historic town of Burra and travelled onto Peterborough which is a town steeped in railway history where we had lunch before travelling to Port Augusta via Wilmington. We are spending 3 nights in Port Augusta which is considered the gateway to some of South Australia’s most spectacular destinations – the Flinders Ranges, the outback and Spencer Gulf.
