Hooray we have our car back!!!!!

Last time we blogged our car had been towed on the back of a tilt tray into Darwin Mitsubishi. We had some major internal engine damage but it is all fixed now. It was horrifically expensive to repair but we are glad.

It is believed the balance belt broke. In the Triton there are two balance shafts which spin at twice the speed of the cam. When the balance belt broke the consequence was the timing belt shredded.

We have taken the opportunity to relax a bit, enjoy the great pool at the caravan park and do some tours as well as visit local tourist attractions. We have visited the Mindal Market and enjoyed some local food from the many and diverse eateries. We also visited the nearby casino.

We did a harbour cruise which specialised in World War 2 sites and history. We found it interesting and the storytelling was done in a thought provoking and humorous manner.

Another tour we did was of WW2 Oil Storage Tunnel facilities. It was quite a large underground facility.

The 5 Oil Storage tunnels were 172 metres long

We also have done a half day fishing charter on Darwin Harbour. It was enjoyable because we caught a variety of fish species. We caught a coral trout, striped snapper, bream, cod bat fish and Moses Perch. Cheryl caught the Coral Trout which was the biggest fish boated. Stephen caught the most fish on the boat.

Gotta say they all tasted great!

  1. Whilst the cause of your little problem did not relate directly to a timing belt failure your experience is a warning to all those who avoid having the timing belt replaced at the recommended time.

Pleased to see you are on the road again.

I often wondered what would have happened if a wartime bomb pierced the Oil Storage Tunnels, how much of Darwin would have survived the war as the tunnels are under Darwin city area.

    1. Agree John, we had the belts done 17,000 kilometres ago so it was disappointing. If a bomb had taken out the tunnel complex I think a good part of Darwin would have gone as well.
