The Dinosaur Trail rocks!!!!!!

Late evening at Julia Creek camp. Take a note of the sign on LHS of picture.
The sign!!!!

Hi everyone,
After a couple of nights at the lovely Julia Creek we travelled east to Richmond. Richmond is a small outback town, located halfway between Townsville and Mount Isa, which is essentially a service centre for the surrounding sheep and beef pastoral community. Characterised by a wide main street it is enhanced by its median strip gardens of bougainvilleas, native trees and shrubs. The town’s main attraction is Kronosaurus Korner – the town’s marine fossil museum – which vividly reminds the visitor that over 100 million years ago this vast, flat area was an inland sea teeming with primitive wildlife.

We left Richmond and travelled to Hughenden another town on the Dinosaur Trail. About 30 km. out of Richmond we were delayed for approximately 45 minutes because of a bad accident.

Hughenden is situated on the banks of the Flinders River, Queensland longest river. Hughenden has direct road access to a number of major centres and tourist attractions within the region. The Flinders Highway runs through Hughenden connecting to Townsville (376km) in the east and Mount Isa (519km) in the west, with a southern sealed road access via the Dinosaur Way to Winton and Longreach.
The Flinders Shire is predominantly a grazing area, with some emerging irrigation pockets. North of the Flinders River is predominately red and black volcanic basalt country and to the south of Hughenden is black soil downs country with open natural grass lands.

The Dingo Fence stretches over 2500 km . We last saw it at Coober Pedy and you can see more of it in our Coober Pedy blog.

We did a day trip out of Hughenden to the spectacular Porcupine Gorge. Porcupine Gorge is an impressive canyon that has been carved into the landscape by the eroding action of Porcupine Creek, revealing strata of sedimentary rocks spanning hundreds of millions of years. In the wider section of the gorge the creek has also created the Pyramid, an isolated monolith of multi-coloured sandstone rising from the floor of the gorge, shaped as its name suggests.

The walk to the gorge was hard going and upon return my legs felt like jelly.

After two days in Hughenden we retraced our steps back to Mount Isa over 3 days. In Mount Isa we are having the car serviced and tyres replaced. Cheryl is having her second Covid jab and we shall stock up big before our next journey

  1. dI & i have done all of the above but we didn’t walk into the gorge, the view from the lookout was enough for us, pretty specky! We have relatives at Mount Isa, Charters Towers & Townsville.
