More Silo Art

We have a few overseas followers who follow our adventures, so we are including details of roads & locations as we know they follow us on Google Earth.

When we last blogged we were free camped at Avoca. The next day we left the van at our free camp and travelled north to various small towns. The first town was St. Arnaud. St. Arnaud is a former gold mining town. The district around St Arnaud supports an agricultural industry of sheep grazing, grains and wineries, with forested areas to the south and open Mallee plains to the north. St Arnaud also has silo art. The Silos at St Arnaud are officially the 38th set of silos to be completed in Australia.

Titled ‘Hope’, Kyle has told the story of three pioneer residents of St Arnaud, a former gold mining town, situated between Ballarat and Mildura.

During the 1800’s ‘Hope’ was about a miner looking for a fleck of gold in his pan, ‘Hope’ for his wife, she will be able to buy food and clothing for her family and ‘Hope’ that a young child will prosper. St. Arnaud also has some murals.

Still travelling north, our next town was Donald where there was a nice mural of an old hotel.

Birchip was as far north as we travelled. Birchip is located on the southern edge of the Mallee in north-western Victoria, approximately 320 km from Melbourne. There are two main routes from the city, one through Ballarat via the Sunraysia Highway and another through Bendigo via the Calder Highway. Birchip has its own little art trail which is a series of murals depicting history and community.

We then headed south through the town of Charlton to our free camp at Avoca.

Today we hooked up our caravan and left our camp at Avoca and travelled a short distance to Rupanyup where we are staying for several nights.
